An exploration in creative play.
When did you start creating?
When I was little I would draw and craft. Always wanting to create. I remember a pottery class in Primary school where we visited a small studio. We made palm sized ceramic pigs. I love this warm, dimly lit vision of being huddled around a table making all the parts of the pig and decorating it. I still have this pig in my bedroom!
I rememeber our childhood next-door neighbours gifting me an old box of stamps, all carved and mounted on wooden blocks, stained with years of inks and that spark of excitement thinking that I can reproduce the same picture again and again and play with how I wanted it to look.
Has what you create changed?
It evolves but dances around similar subjects such as woodland trees, animals in nature and also my fondness of vintage preloved collections of ceramics and fuctional kitchenware. where i am in my life’s journey and surroundings always influences my work.
What medium, materials, methods do you use?
Printmaking with linocut, stoneware ceramics, acrylic and watercolour paintings, mixed media works. i build up sketchbooks for ideas and practice, journalling my favourite places, plants in the garden, a view on a walk , interesting objects in a museum visit.
I love using my hands to form my work, carving lino blocks and waiting to see how a ceramic peice comes out of the kiln. There is theraputic way of losing myself in the process which gives me a sense of calm and sparks more ideas.
What influences/ inspires your work?
Seasons strongly influence, forming work through building or removing materials. love of mark-making and textures. my Cambridgeshire garden, walking along the River Ouse and visits to Norfolk coast.
